Changes to environmental icon - KESAB Tidy Towns

South Australia’s largest community environmental education program Tidy Towns has announced a significant face lift for 2008.

Tidy Towns (in its 31st) year embraces towns, councils, schools and business to implement best environmental practices through action and community participation at the local level.

Changes in 2008 include new on line entry options, regional workshops, and regional annual awards presentations.

Entries in 2008 Tidy Towns will require participants to include project information in their submission allowing initial assessment prior to judging which will reach all corners of South Australia.

Environmental categories have been reviewed with stronger focus on sustainability across water, waste, energy, education and innovation, bio diversity, but retaining strong community links.

“Assessment of all entries will embrace the communities understanding of sustainability issues and how innovation and best practice can impact at the local level”, said Tidy Towns Director Luke Callaghan.

“By introducing regional work shops KESAB will be able showcase examples supporting activities and identifying vulnerabilities encouraging appropriate community action and education”, he said.

The overall winner of the Tidy Towns program automatically enters the Australian Tidy Towns Awards to be judged early 2009.

KESAB Tidy Towns has a significant level of community support and participation with over 300 towns and 240 schools entries last year.

“Issues facing South Australia communities including water conservation, waste reduction and resource recovery, energy efficiency and greenhouse emission reduction require community action and Tidy Towns provides a platform for such change”, said Mr Callaghan.
