Port Adelaide Enfield Sustainable Cities Winner
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield has won the Resource Recovery and Waste Management and Young Legends category awards in the Keep Australia Beautiful Associations Sustainable Cities awards announced in Canberra.
The national judge Sean Rooney commended Port Adelaide Enfield for demonstrating effectiveness and innovation in waste management.
Council has been successful in diverting approximately 500 tonne of organic waste per annum through the Residential Bulk Green Organics program.
Council further demonstrated Australian leadership in waste management by diverting and recycles 9 600 tonnes of construction and demolition materials and hard waste in the 2008/2009 period.
John Phillips Executive Director of KESAB environmental solutions said “Port Adelaide Enfield works closely with residents to encourage home composting and increased awareness through education and business programs supporting waste diversion from landfill. Councils proactive and innovative approach has been rewarded by winning the Sustainable Cities Award”.
PAE Council also was awarded the Young Legends award presented to Portside Christian School for their work in actively caring for Mangrove Cove. The project provides learning opportunities for students and engagement with a range of environmentally sustainable initiatives in the local area.
“South Australian schools and communities are leading Australia with environmental education initiatives supported through programs such as Zero Waste Wipe Out Waste delivered by KESAB environmental solutions and Natural Resource Management Education through the NRM Boards”, said Mr Phillips.
The Australian Sustainable Cities awards recognize efforts by community, residents councils, government agencies and business to enhance, preserve and protect the environment ensuring long term sustainability at all levels.
