Research & Monitoring

'Butt It' Community Awareness Campaign

The Please Butt It, Then Bin It campaign is Australia’s most comprehensive cigarette butt reduction advertising and awareness initiative. Elements include outdoor, radio, bus panel and other targeted advertising, promotion of personal ash trays, interface with a range of stakeholders, and strategic support to local government and industry to reduce the impact of butts in the environment.

Research findings of campaigns delivered in Qld, ACT, SA, Victoria are available from KESAB. Research includes awareness of Butt It message, recall of campaign, litter data, and smokers views on the campaign.

Clean Site

A survey was undertaken at over 50 housing construction sites in August 2004. Research included assessment of best practices and industry take up of Clean Site, resource recovery from building sites, and awareness of Clean Site by contractors and "subbies".

KESAB Waterwatch

Six times a year Waterwatch participants test the water quality at their local waterways to monitor catchment health.

Recycling Depot Survey

Findings of research conducted by KESAB in consultation with Recyclers of SA during May 2004 highlight the success of CDL in South Australia. Over 100 recycling depots were surveyed with 50% responding.

Findings showed that since CDL regulations were changed to embrace a wider range of containers in January 2003, the collection rates of containers have increased by 15%. Importantly, new products including increased plastic and flavoured milk and juice cartons were being returned, which is very positive in both resource recovery (diversion from landfill) and reduced litter in the environment.

Dukes Highway Research: An Examination of Litter Disposal among Road User Groups

The Dukes Highway is the major transport corridor between Adelaide (South Australia) and Melbourne (Victoria). The main aims of the research were to identify litter type and littering groups contributing to litter pollution on the South Australian section of this highway, and to determine options that will influence behavioral change and litter reduction by those groups identified.
