KESAB study identifies need to reduce waste from building sites May 2009

KESAB recently released a report on the amount of waste generated on typical domestic building sites.

The study is part of KESAB’s CLEAN SITE® building and construction industry education program which focuses on reducing litter, diverting waste from landfill as well as protecting waterways during the construction process.

“With over 30% of all waste to landfill being generated from the construction and demolition industries, the study looked to identify what materials can be recycled and recovered,” said John Phillips, KESAB Executive Director.

“Every one in the construction industry has a role to play in reducing the amount of waste to achieve the State Zero Waste target. The research highlights the potential to divert over 50 000 tonnes of waste to resources from landfill each year,” he added.

The report also identified that changes to existing practices and culture in the building and construction industry will support a more sustainable future, reduce impact on landfill sites and meet South Australian zero waste targets.
